Layering a Sleeveless Crochet Top

What are the chances of your crocheted top being an almost exact colour match with not one, but several items in your wardrobe? Pretty high, apparently, considering you have wisely made it in your favourite colour.

Last time I showed you the blouse match I had discovered in the depths of my wardrobe (which is not that deep, to be honest). This time, however, while I paired this top with trousers of nearly the same shade of grey, I wore it over a crisp white button-down shirt to create a smart clean-cut look:

This outfit is a perfect example of why I love wearing (and crocheting!) cropped sleeveless tops: they are perfect for layering!

This particular look demonstrates how easy it is to pair a short top like this with a shirt in a different colour underneath and

a) create a colour contrast,

b) play with different lengths,

c) bring out different dimensions of two different textures and

d) give a casual edge to the classic white top/dark bottom combo.

I love contrasty black and white outfits and the smart, dressy effect these two colours create when put together, but I do have a fairly soft appearance, so wearing white with dark grey instead of black works a lot better for me and does not overpower my natural low-contrast.

P.S. I have yet another combo with a nearly exact colour match but will save it for another post!

Pattern Update: I have received enquiries regarding the actual pattern for this top and to answer those, I am currently working on some tutorials I need to add to the pattern to make sure you too can get all those details perfect. Once I am finished, the pattern will be ready to go to my tech-editor. So if you would like to get a heads-up once the pattern is published, the best thing to do is to subscribe to my mailing list (=this blog) – you will be the first one to know when it goes live.

  1. I love this look very much and you’re right, the white cuts into the dark grey, so that it’s not overpowering.
It is true that finding one’s colouring and colour wheel is absolutely essential so that your crochet garment and wardrobe actually bring out the best of you! 🙂

    1. Glad you like it! Thanks! 🙂

I realise, I am much more conscious about colours when buying my yarn. If before it was “this skein is so pretty, it will make such a nice shawl”, now no matter how pretty the yarn is, it has to fit in with my natural colour and the rest of my stuff.
