I am very pleased to announce that I have just finished writing up the pattern for my little grey top (the one I have been bragging about here, here and here), which means it has officially made it into the “coming soon” category!
While my fairy tech-editor is working her magic on the pattern, let me brag one more time about this design and show you another of my outfits featuring this little number.
This time I went for an extreme head-to-toe monochromatic look and wore it with the same blouse I showed earlier plus a pair of slim-fitting jeans of the same shade of grey. Although it is not as bold as, say an all-yellow outfit would be, it is still a colour statement. And my favourite colour statement!
Here is a short list of what I like about this particular outfit:
Mixed Textures
All of the pieces have different textures which, when put together, add depth and dimension to the overall look and stop it from being too matchy-matchy. The smooth silky surface of the blouse and the strong sturdy denim of the jeans bring out the soft repousse relief of the crocheted top and make it the hero piece, while the shiny metallic leather of the shoes creates that extra pop of glamour. I usually shy away from colour blocking and mixing patterns in my outfits, as that requires a bit more sartorial acumen than I possess, but mixing different textures of the same colour and wearing them as layers make my fashion experimentations a lot less daunting.
Visual Effect
The single shade monochrome creates one uninterrupted line from head to toe, which is a good thing, as it visually elongates my silhouette and makes me appear longer and taller. At least in theory.
Blank Canvas
I suppose I could boost this all-grey combo with a contrasting colour statement accessory if I wanted to break up the monochromatic flow. I also suppose it wouldn’t be that difficult, since, with a blank canvas of an outfit like this, you cannot go too wrong choosing a contrast colour, can you?

I, like you, struggle with patterned garments. Is this top too flowery? Does it make me look old? Not too sure of these geometric patters…?
I tend to go for monochromatic or bi-chromatic outfits. Grey is very very central. And what I lack in pattern expertise, I try to compensate with texture too. My secret colour weapon, when one colour is on the cards for the day, it wearing earrings… because then they help me introduce a crochet accessory. 🙂
This look is definitely one that I can see myself wearing, as skinny grey jeans and long grey tunics are a staple in my wardrobe. The only thing I would change are the shoes: I’m a boots gal! 😉 So I would have to wear grey ankle boots. 🙂

Well, I’m going to let you in a little secret of mine: I have two kinds of shoes: boots (which I have too many of, according to my husband… how can 7 pairs be too many????!) and sandales. But I have nothing inbetween… 🙂
Sandals and boots – that’s practical, since together they can pretty much cover most of weather variations!
I know. Still, sometimes, it would be nice to have a proper pair of girly shoes. 🙂
I have been following your blog closely, although haven’t commented until now. I, too, am attempting a grand metamorphosis of my wardrobe. Additionally, I am figuring out how my crocheted garments fit in. Being at the beginning of my love of crocheting my clothes, I have come up with two ironclad rules: 1) I will not use cheap yarn and 2) the garment must not appear homemade. I was so glad to read that you share rule 2. I mean no disrespect to anyone, but I will not appear in public wearing something that resembles an afghan. I have pared down my clothing drastically in the past month. I am now to the stage of taking everything out of the closet and hanging back only my best and most loved pieces. Your design style is quite close to mine, I think. Clean lines, classic cuts, with minimal ruffles or trims. There fore, in order to have the “crochet competency” to make your patterns, I am teaching myself Tunisian, as I collect your patterns (thanks for the indie giftalong sale). I will continue to enjoy your blog and your lovely designs!
